The new life of the CWU-45

Pilots of the American army have been wearing jackets called CWU-45 since the 1950s, which have continuously changed over time, incorporating technical innovations. In our previous article, the history of the jacket was presented, but now we would like to introduce a few models that build on the basic CWU-45 model while carrying forward the proven ideas of the original jacket with something new added.

Functionality was important when designing the CWU jacket, but officers didn't want their pilots walking around with their hands in their pockets, so they had the pockets placed at an oblique angle and high up. Velcro fasteners on the pockets are used to eliminate problems caused by foreign objects (no torn buttons). After Tom Cruise wore this jacket in the 1986 movie TOP GUN, the jacket's popularity skyrocketed.

The jacket's 100% special nylon material is completely water-repellent. Beneath the outer layer lies a double lining that keeps you warm on cold days.
The outer material of the jacket even resists cigarette embers; it is a truly high-quality, durable material.

Compared to the basic model, the difference is noticeable in the thickness, as this jacket, similarly to the basic MA-1 model, features a thin lining whose color is the familiar orange typical of Alpha jackets. Like the CWU-45, the jacket has a narrow collar and high-positioned, obliquely cut pockets. Available in dark green, black, and greyblack colors in our webshop.

This model, similarly to the basic jacket, has a thick inner lining that is not orange, but matches the color of the jacket's outer shell. It has a slightly narrower fit than the basic model, so you need to factor this in when choosing your size. You can choose from three colors: black, replica blue, sage green.

Taking all main aspects into consideration, the shape of the CWU-45 has been retained—meaning the jacket's lining matches the color of the outer shell, the narrow collar and large, high-positioned pockets are all present on the jacket, but plenty of patches have been added, making this model exciting. Not only do we find quite a few of them on the front of the jacket, but five tastefully arranged patches have also been placed on the back.
